What Is the HbA1c Test?
Glucose in your blood attaches to haemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen inside red blood cells. Because red blood cells live for around three months, measuring how much haemoglobin carries attached glucose tells you what your average blood sugar has been over that period. That average is reported as a percentage and is called HbA1c.
